Cambridge, MASS.—The New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) in conjunction with the Presidents Council and its Athletic Leadership has announced the suspension of conference play during the winter season due to the ongoing health and safety concerns surrounding COVID-19. The winter sports sponsored by the NECC that are affected by this announcement are the men's and women's basketball programs.
The health and safety of the student-athletes and staff is at the forefront of every discussion and decision made by the conference leadership, and with that in mind, the NECC has deemed it would not be sensible to participate in conference competition during the winter season. Assuming the spread of the virus is contained and safety can be assured, conference play will resume during the spring semester.
"The health and safety of the Lesley University Community remains our top priority," said Director of Athletics Stephane Smyrl. "We are eager for a safe return to play and look forward to the time when it is safe to resume competitions." Lesley University and the athletic department will offer opportunities for training and engaging in meaningful athletically related activities during the spring semester for these winter sports.
The NECC Presidents' Council has not yet made a determination on the status of spring sports. It will continue to meet regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, as all options will be thoroughly evaluated to make an informed decision based on both federal and state health and safety guidelines.
The Lynx winter and spring student-athletes have been invited to return to train with their respective teams and coaches, provided they are structured in accordance with Lesley's procedures and with local and state regulations.
