Eagles power, pitch past Lynx in Saturday doubleheader

SOMERVILLE, MA – Daniel Webster slugged its way to a 16-3 win in Game 1 and one-hit the Lynx in Game 2 of its doubleheader sweep of Lesley Saturday afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference baseball play.


Eagles shortstop Rich Lizotte (West Warwick, RI/West Warwick) enjoyed a monster opener, going 4-for-4 with two home runs and eight RBI's, and Erick Bourdeau (Alton Bay, NH/Prospect Mountain) went 4-for-4 with four runs scored. In Game 2, starter Aaron Agrelo took a no-hitter into the sixth and struck out five Lynx in twirling a one-hitter.


Lesley's led off Game 1 with a pair of singles from Ray Cohen (Coventry, CT/Coventry)  and John Gosnell (Toronto,ON/York School), with both successfully stealing a base . Eagles starter (Kory Kiro (Goffstown, NH/Goffstown) then struck out Lynx batting leader Tyler Plourd (Canton,CT/Canton) and Aqib Shah (Watertown, MA/Watertown)  before Andrew Cootware (Colchester, CT/Colchester) flew out to center to squash a golden opportunity for the Lynx.


Daniel Webster got on the board to start the second inning after Bourdeau hit a double to center and Lizotte homered over the left field fence to bring in the first two runs of the afternoon.


The Eagles picked up three in the fourth, with Tyler Bonin (Litchfield, NH/Campbell) drawing a walk and scoring on a Bourdeau double. Lizotte doubled home Ryan Dupont (Merrimack, NH/Merrimack), who reached on an error, and a Josh Chasse (Haverhill, MA/Haverhill) sac fly made it a 5-0 game after four. 


Dupont started the Eagles four-run fifth with a single to left field, bringing home Kyle Brigham (Hudson, MA/Alvirne) Korey LeLievre (Hudson, MA/Alvirne). He and Bourdeau were brought home on a double from Lizotte to left field, making it a 9-0 lead.


Daniel Webster exploded for seven more an inning later. Lizotte crushed a three-run homer to left, and Darrik Marstaller (Spofford, NH/LKeane) tacked on two more with a single up the middle that upped the lead to 16-0. 


Lesley would score one in the sixth on a Cootware bases-loaded hit-by-pitch and two more in the seventh on an RBI triple from Andrew Colon (Chelsea, MA/Chelsea), who scored two batters later on an Eagles error that made it a 16-3 game, which would be the final.


For the Lynx, Cohen went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.


Kiro scattered nine hits and struck out nine, allowing three runs, all earned, in the win.


In Game 2, Agrelo and Lesley lefty Greg Anglin (Milton, MA/Milton) squared off in what became a fast-moving pitchers' duel. In the second inning, Daniel Webster got on the board compliments of the Lynx defense. Bourdeau reached base on a Ryan McQuade throwing error, and Dupont singled to left field, both scoring on a throwing error by Lesley catcher David Hersey


Lesley got one back in the bottom of the 3rd, when Colon, who reached base after being hit by a pitch and scored from second on an error by Lizotte to bring the score to 2-1. 


In the top of the sixth, Anglin got the Lynx out of a jam when Lizotte stepped up to the plate with runners on second and third and two outs. Anglin sent the red-hot shortstop down swinging with a fastball low and away to end the inning with the Lynx still well within striking distance. 


In the bottom of the sixth, David Hersey singled to left field, breaking up Agrelo's run at a no-hitter, but the Eagles pitcher struck out Plourd, then Aqib Shah (Watertown, MA/Watertown) flew out to short to leave the tying run on base. 


Lesley came within feet of tying the contest on its final swing with two outs in the seventh. Colon sent a towering fly ball deep to left, but Marstalled hauled it in at the warning track, securing the doubleheader sweep for the Eagles and completing a stellar start for Agrelo, who allowed one hit, one unearned run and struck out five.


Anglin also went the distance for the Lynx allowing two unearned runs and striking out four.


At the plate, LaLievre and Dupont each went 2-for-3 for the Eagles.

The teams meet tomorrow, wrapping up the three-game series in Nashua, NH at 1:00 p.m.
