WALTHAM, Mass. – The Lasell College baseball team fell victim to a pair of big innings by the visiting Lynx of Lesley University in an 11-4 non-conference defeat. The Lasers dropped to 7-14 overall while Lesley climbed to 7-7 for the 2013 campaign.
Bobby Stachura (Middletown, Conn.) went 4 for 4 at the plate for Lasell, with three singles, a double, an RBI and a run scored. Mike Rodriguez (Brockton, Mass.) started for Lasell, going four innings, allowing four runs on three hits and four walks with four strikeouts. Aaron Catarina (No. Smithfield, R.I.) took the loss for Lasell, allowing a pair of runs in a third of an inning of work.
John Gosnell (Toronto, Canada) drove in three runs for Lesley, while scoring twice and finishing 3 for 4 at the dish. Robert Parson (Commack, N.Y.) had a single and a double for the Lynx with a pair of runs scored, and Adam Ciampi (Westford, Mass.) finished with two singles, a run scored and two RBI's. Jeff Landry (Vestal, N.Y.) claimed the victory on the mound for Lesley, tossing seven innings while giving up four runs on eight hits and fanning three on the night. Koby Mitchell (Fall River, Mass.) threw two scoreless innings in relief tallying three strikeouts without allowing a hit.
Lasell opened the scoring in the home half of the first inning when Dustin Brown (Falmouth, Mass.) reached on a one-out single, advanced to second on a groundout and scored on Stachura's two-out single to take a 1-0 lead.
The Lasers added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth when they got one-out singles by Stachura and Dan Gagnon (Pomfret Center, Conn.) to put runners on first and second. Stachura scored on an RBI single by Wes Hurty (Windsor, Conn.) and then loaded the bases when Skyler Beckerman (Pensacola, Fla.) was hit by a pitch. Gagnon came in to score on a sacrifice fly by Jackson Gervais (Rehoboth, Mass.) and a single by Dan Mickens (Montclair, N.J.) plated Hurty to put Lasell on top 4-0.
In the top of the fifth David Hersey (Wolfeboro, N.H.) reached on a fielder's choice after a pair of walks to load the bases for the Lynx with nobody out. A walk issued to Ryan McQuade (Rochester, N.H.) forced in a run to make it 4-1. Lasell got the first out when they forced a runner at the plate on a fielder's choice but Lesley continued their rally when Ciampi singled, scoring two and cutting the lead to 4-3. A foul out to resulted in the second out of the inning, but a pair of walks pushed the tying run across for Lesley. Gosnell followed with a two-run single that put Lesley in front 6-4.
Lesley added three more runs in the top of the seventh getting RBI singles from Kevin Hopwood (Winterhaven, Fla.) and Gosnell before a sacrifice fly by Casey Blanchard (Bernardston, Mass.) made it 9-4 heading to the seventh inning stretch.
Lesley added a run on the top of the eighth and the ninth to produce the final 11-4 margin.
The Lynx will square off with Fitchburg State on Tuesday April 9th at home at 7:00 p.m. while Lasell will return to the diamond on Wednesday April 10th when they host Rivier University in a GNAC doubleheader beginning at 5:00 p.m.
