LEICESTER, Mass. - Becker College won the inaugural New England Collegiate Conference Men's Soccer Championship after defeating Lesley University 4-1 on Sunday afternoon. The Hawks jumped out to an early 2-0 lead within the first seven minutes of the match that created an insurmountable deficit for the Lynx.
Scott Medeiros (Assonet, Mass.) kicked off the scoring at 2:41 as the senior forced his way into a crowd of players to head in a lead cross from Jeffrey Hurd (Melrose, Mass.). Less than four minutes later, Dircilino DeBrito (New Bedford, Mass.) redirected a pass to the back of the net to make the score 2-0.
The Lynx got on the scoreboard with three minutes remaining in the first half when Tyler Reeves (Coventry, Conn.) sprinted past his defender down the right side of the field and fired a shot off the finger tips of Hawks keeper Aaron Fill (Delta, B.C.) into the goal.
In the second half, Becker's DeBrito scored his second goal of the match when Hurd passed the ball between two Lynx defenders for a breakaway score. Samuel Adjei (Worcester, Mass.) added an insurance goal in the 85th minute to clinch the championship for Becker.
Lesley's Zach Almeida-Beers (Rehoboth, Mass.) made four saves in the match and was named to the NECC All-Tournament Team along with teammates Stephen Siragusa (Valley Stream, N.Y.), Scott Wheeler (East Hampton, Conn.), and Zach Rocha (New Bedford, Mass.).
The Lynx end their 2008 season with a 6-13-1 record, earning the #4 seed in the playoffs in just their third season of existence for the men's soccer program.
