WELLESLEY, MA -- Lesley opened up a 10-3 lead after five innings in support of NECC Pitcher of the Week Jennifer Dorval, besting the Blue 10-4 in Wednesday's opener before falling 8-3 in a daylight-shortened Game 2.
Catcher Allison Fountain collected two hits in two at-bats in Game 2, walking and scoring a run, but Wellesley scored three in the first and three in the third off Lynx starter Cassandra Knox, who allowed five earned in on seven hits in four innings of work.
The Lynx broke a 1-1 tie with a three-spot in the second inning of the opener. Sarson plated senior Jenna Fralick thanks to an Abby Casey error in centerfield, and along with Mangiaratti, came around to score on a Dorval single. Wellesley got two back in the bottom of the frame with a Lindsay Johnson RBI double and a Casey sacrifice fly, but Lesley extended its lead for good in the top of the third.
A Mangiaratti bases-loaded single scored right fielder Maria Nazzaro, who bunted her way on base, and a passed ball scored Rian Powers, pinch-running after a Jodee Doka single. With Mangiaratti on third, Sarson reached on a Blue error, her only at-bat without a hit, which scored the Lynx designated player to put the visitors ahead 8-3.
Lesley added two more two innings later on a Mangiaratti triple that scored Doka and a Sarson RBI single that sent home Mangiaratti, going up 10-3 after five and going onto with 10-4.
Doka and Fralick each earned their second multi-hit games of the season as two of seven Lynx to cross home plate in the team's second straight 10-4 victory and fifth straight win overall.
Dorval went the distance, allowing four runs (three earned) scattering 12 hits over her seven innings and striking out two.
An RBI single off the bat of Jayne Ellis turned into a two-run base hit after an error by Lesley centerfielder Gabrielle Brixey, and Ellis later scored on an RBI groundout by Mariah Phillips to put Wellesley in front 3-0 after one. Two innings later, a Phillips single plated Casey, and Mara Blesoff followed with a two-run single to make it a 6-0 game.
Lesley rallied for three in the fifth, with Nazzaro reaching on an error that scored junior Jessica Guevara, and back-to-back RBI singles from Fralick and Mangiaratti brought the Lynx to within three at 6-3.
After an Ellis RBI double and a Phillips RBI single in the Blue half of the fifth, Lesley went down in order in what would be the team's last at-bat in the sixth, trailing 8-3 when the game was called due to darkness.
At 8-7, Lesley takes on Newbury in an NECC doubleheader on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. on the campus of Brandeis University in Waltham, MA.
