Brookline, Mass.- The Lesley softball team dropped the first game of a double header against Newbury College 15-7, and was tied 8-8 heading into the extra innings of game two when it was halted due to darkness. With the loss in game one, Lesley still remains atop the NECC leader board with a 9-2 record, and improves the Nighthawks to 7-4 in NECC play.
GAME 1- INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
- Courtney Goggin lead off the game with a single, followed by Riley Pickett reaching on an error and Jordan Day getting walked. Jordan Raab hit a bases loaded single to score two runs, followed by a Kristen DiCicco RBI single to make it 3-0. The Lynx scored their fourth run in the first off a defensive miscue.
- Newbury evened the score in the bottom of the frame scoring four runs on no hits.
- With two outs in the top of the third, Goggin placed a perfect bunt for a hit to give her team some momentum. Three hits in a row from Ashleigh Acker, Riley Pickett, and Jordan Day gave the Lynx three runs and a 7-4 lead. Newbury added one run in the bottom half of the frame to make it 7-5 going into the fourth.
- The Nighthawks scored 10 unanswered runs in the fourth and fifth innings to secure a 15-7 victory in five innings.
GAME 2- GAME IN PROGRESS 8-8 TOP OF THE 8TH (halted due to darkness)
Trailing 8-7 in the bottom of the seventh, the Nighthawks tied the game on an RBI groundout by junior Alexis Viera. With daylight fading and suspended due to darkness, the game will resume with extra innings on Thursday afternoon. The Nighthawks led 7-5 after six innings, but the Lynx looked to have stolen the game on a three-run home run in the top of the seventh by freshman Jordan Day taking an 8-7 lead.
According to international tiebreaking rules, the Lynx will begin the eighth inning with freshman Kristen DiCicco on second and senior Theresa Pereira at the plate, given no substitutions are made. The Nighthawks will start the bottom of their inning with senior Samantha Libby on second and junior Madison Elliott at the plate, given the Nighthawks make no substitutions.
