In just five years, Coach Dan Flynn went from graduate school to one of the most successful head coaching starts in Division III cross country.
On the track side, after a brief time as a club team, he brought the program to NCAA Division III varsity status starting the fall 2011.
In his debut season in the New England Collegiate Conference, Flynn guided the Lesley University women’s cross country to the conference championship. In 2009, not only did he lead the women to their second championship but the Lesley men won the NECC Championship as well. This would be the first conference championship for a men’s sport in Lesley University history.
Coach Flynn was named the Coach of the Year by the New England Collegiate Conference in 2009. In just two years, Flynn has coached 3 NECC Runners of the Year, 2 NECC Rookies of the Year, and 15 NECC All-Conference.
Flynn was introduced as the new head coach for cross country at Lesley University on July 20th, 2005. Flynn also works as the Director of Community Service At Lesley University where he has increased the number of hours students volunteer from 500 to 5080 in four years.
Coach Flynn's coaching career began in 2001 when he founded a middle school girl's track team in Camden, New Jersey during a year of service with AmeriCorps. He went on to coach track and field at his Alma mater Thayer Academy which went on to win their fifth ISL Championship. Throughout his time at Thayer, Dan coached many individual ISL and NEPSTA champions in the 1500m, 3000m, and 800m.
He went on to receive his Master's Degree from Boston College in Higher Education Administration with a concentration in college student development.
Coach Dan Flynn started running in high school at Thayer Academy in Braintree, Massachusetts. There, he broke the school record in the 800m and was on the Independent School League (ISL) and New England Champion 4x400m relay in 1996. Flynn was recruited to run at Merrimack College where he ran four years of cross country and track. He was named captain in his junior year.
He ran the 2006 Boston Marathon as well as many 5k and 10k races throughout New England.
In his free time, Coach Flynn is the founder of The Flynn Running Company and the head coach of the Central Massachusetts Team in Training marathon group. Flynn prides himself on the ability to coach novice to elite runners.
Coach Flynn is certified as a Level 1 Coach by USA Track and Field and Team in Training Level 1 Run Coach.
