Women's Soccer Scores One in Each Half to Top Wellesley

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Lesley University women's soccer team scored one goal in each half and blanked host Wellesley College 2-0 Sunday afternoon at the Wellesley Invitational. Senior Cassidy Hopkins (Porter, Texas) iced the game for the Lynx with an insurance tally in the 77th minute to help lift the Lynx to 3-1-1 on the season. The setback for the Blue was their blemish of the season as they drop to 3-1-0 overall.

Lesley junior captain Samantha Turnbull (Holtsville, N.Y.) opened the scoring in the first half with her first goal of the season. Turnbull corralled the ball in the box and took a touch before finding the back of the Wellesley net following Lesley's second corner kick opportunity of the game at 21:53. The Lynx finished with a 5-1 advantage in corner kick chances in the contest.

The visitors doubled their lead in the second half when senior Hopkins scored her first goal of the season on an unassisted effort. Hopkins tucked a shot inside the right side post, past the diving Olivia Reckley (Grosse Ile, Mich.). on a strike from 12 yards out at 76:45.

The hosts had their chances in the contest, outshooting the Lynx 12-6, but couldn't find the back of the net. The Blue also got seven shots on target and just missed taking the lead in the first when senior Maddie Carlborg (Burbank, Calif.) rang a shot of the crossbar.

Lesley junior Lilly Donovan (Newburyport, Mass.) was excellent in between the pipes and made seven saves on the day – including making a fantastic stop on a high shot from Melise Knowles (Diablo, Calif.) in the 36th minute – to improve 2-1-1 on the year. Wellesley's Reckley made three saves to drop to 3-1 overall.

Both teams will return to action on Wednesday, September 14. The Lynx will return home and welcome Tufts University at 8:00p while Wellesley will travel to Endicott for a 7:00 PM contest.
