Mathewson's First Goal Contributes to 4-1 Lynx Win on Senior Day

CAMBRIDGE, MA. -- The Lesley Women's soccer team defeated the Bay Path University Wildcats by a score of 4-1 on Senior Day. The Lynx move to 9-2 on the season and 2-0 in the conference, while the Wildcats fall to 6-4 on the season and 0-2 in the conference.

  • The Lynx got out to an early start, keeping the pressure on Bay Path goalie Caitlyn Esposito for much of the game's opening ten minutes.
  • A two-minute stretch for the Lynx saw four corner kicks from Macey Merlo, with the fourth resulting in Kayleigh Chicas' third goal of the season. Chicas came on for Julia Cohn thirty seconds earlier and found the back of the net after a Claire Hounslow header off of Merlo's corner found her foot. It was Hounslow's first assist of the season.
  • Lesley continued to attack and found success again four minutes later. Merlo scored a goal of her own, the third of her freshman campaign, after Gabby Vesona found her cutting. Vesona notched her second assist of the season and the Lynx jumped up 2-0.
  • Esposito had to work hard in the first half, as the Lynx peppered eighteen shots in her direction.
  • Lesley celebrated the careers of eight seniors during halftime. Along with their families, the Lynx recognized Brittley Gaan, Melanie Mathewson, Julia De Mars, Hope Seasholes,  Vesona, Katelyn Scott, Holly Buschelman, and Janah MacNamee.
  • The Lynx held strong after the Senior Day ceremony at halftime, with Hounslow grabbing a goal of her own. Cohn was able to thread a pass into Hounslow, who scored easily. The score was good for Hounslow's first of the season and Cohn earned her second assist.
  • One minute later, an attack by Kerrie Larson was cut short by a foul in the box by Bay Path's Lillian Doherty. The penalty kick chance was given to senior defender Mathewson, who celebrated her own Senior Day with her first collegiate goal.
  • Gaan shut out the Wildcats in her 70 minutes in goal, saving the only shot on net from Bay Path.
  • Bay Path got on the board with a free kick goal scored by Joanna Feliciano in the 83rd minute. Feliciano sent it just over the head of freshman goalie Audrey Calhoun.
  • The Lynx delivered another 18 shots in the second half. Hounslow led the team with eight shots, with Maddy Deitrick attempting six and Remington Hasley going for three.
  • Gaan bumped her record to 4-2 on the season, saving one shot. Calhoun saved one of two shots, while Esposito saved thirteen of seventeen Lynx attempts.

The Lynx begin a stretch of three straight away games with a match at Gordon College on Tuesday October 8th, time to be determined.
