Running Career

Coach Dan Flynn started running in high school at Thayer Academy in Braintree, Massachusetts.  There, he broke the school record in the 800m and was on the Independent School League (ISL) and New England Champion 4x400m relay in 1996.  Flynn was recruited to run at Merrimack College where he ran four years of cross country and track.  He was named captain in his junior year.

He ran the 2006 Boston Marathon as well as many 5k and 10k races throughout New England.

Coaching Career

Coach Flynn's coaching career began in 2001 when he founded a middle school girl's track team in Camden, New Jersey during a year of service with AmeriCorps.  He went on to coach track and field at his Alma mater Thayer Academy which went on to win their fifth ISL Championship.  Throughout his time at Thayer, Dan coached many individual ISL and NEPSTA champions in the 1500m, 3000m, and 800m.

He went on to receive his Master's Degree from Boston College in Higher Education Administration with a concentration in college student development.  He is currently the Director of Community Service at Lesley University.

In 2005, Coach Flynn was hired by Lesley University to start a men's and women's cross country program.  Three years later, the Lesley University women's cross country team would go on to win the 2008 New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Championship.  Coach Flynn has coached eight individual All-Conference runners in three years.

Recently, Coach Flynn has been hired by Team in Training to coach marathon runners.

Coaching Philosophy

Coach Flynn takes an individual approach to all of his athletes and coaches them to run beyond their limits.  He takes time to educate each runner on running efficiency, running economy, training, nutrition, stretching, and lifestyle changes that will allow for more efficient training.

Coach Flynn is certified as a Level 1 Coach by USA Track and Field.

Amanda Shaffer
Title: Assistant Coach, Cross Country

Amanda Shaffer begins her first season as an assistant coach for the Lesley University men's and women's cross country programs.

Prior to joining the Lynx, Shaffer served as the long and middle distance assistant track & field coach for Brookline High School in Brookline, Massachusetts.  Shaffer helped guide the girls' track & field team to some of their personal bests.  She also trained several athletes at Foss Running Camp.

Shaffer graduated from Coyle and Cassidy High School in Taunton, Massachusetts where she is the school record holder for their cross country course, the one-mile, the 1,000m, and the distance medley.  She ran cross country for four years and track & field as well as one season of swimming and one season of softball competition.  Shaffer earned her Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice from Northeastern University where she ran cross country and track.  Currently, she is in pursuit of her Master's Degree in Fine Arts for Creative Writing, Stage and Screen at Lesley University.  She is currently employed by the U.S. Department of Labor.

One of Shaffer's greatest running accomplishments is being a qualifier for the Boston Marathon.

Anne Leonard
Title: Assistant Coach, Cross Country

Anne Leonard begins her first season as an assistant coach for the Lesley University men's and women's cross country programs.

Prior to joining the Lynx, Leonard spent three years as the assistant coach for the girl’s cross country and track and field teams at the Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor, Connecticut. Leonard helped guide the LC cross country team to three Founder’s League Championships and two third place finishes at the NEPSTA Championships. She also coached at the Trailside Cross Country Camp in Killington, Vermont.

Originally from Manchester, Connecticut, Leonard began running in middle school. She was a four year letter winner in cross country, indoor and outdoor track at Gettysburg College, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania where she majored in English and women’s studies. While at Gettysburg, Leonard was a two time qualifier for the ECAC championships and is a co-school record holder for the 4X800 meter race. Currently, she is in pursuit of her Master's Degree in Education, Middle School Humanities at Lesley University and is the Program Coordinator at Lesley’s Office of Community Service.
