Lesley's Benway promoted to athletics director

Lesley University Director of Student Life and Academic Development Nathaniel Mays has announced the promotion of Jen Benway to Athletics Director.

"I am delighted that Jen accepted the appointment as Athletics Director and am confident that she will do an outstanding job," said Mays.

Benway, who served as associate director of athletics during the 2010-11 academic year, previously served as assistant athletics director and recruiting coordinator from July 2006 to August 2011. She has been a part of the department since 1999, when she accepted the position of head softball coach, which she still holds and will continue to hold.

"Because Jen has been a part of the building of the athletics department at Lesley, it made sense for us to talk with her about her interest in the job," Mays said. "It was evident in our conversations with Jen that she had the right knowledge and vision to put her own positive stamp on the program."

She will begin her new position immediately.

Said Benway, "I’m honored to be named the Director of Athletics for Lesley University.  I’ve worked in our athletics department for 12 years, and it means the world to me to be able to carry on the legacy that Stanley Vieira has left behind while making a mark of my own on the department."

"My goal is to provide an environment that allows the best possible experience for our student-athletes.  I’ve witnessed this program grow from a small athletic program into a top contender in the NECC, and with continued success we can stay at this level."

In addition to overseeing the department's nationwide recruiting efforts for all 16 NCAA programs, Benway has overseen the Lynx game and event management and student work study while previously overseeing the Lynx Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and serving as the department's senior woman administrator (SWA). Benway became a full-time member of the Lynx staff in 2006, and has aided in Lesley's blossoming from a single-sex college to co-ed institution and athletics power.

On the diamond, she's guided Lesley softball from the program's infancy into a regional power, winner of four consecutive conference championships and participant in the 2011 NCAA Tournament.

"Coaching softball is a passion of mine and at this point in my career, I can’t imagine my life without it. The administration has been very supportive of me continuing to coach, and I look forward to the 2012 season and beyond."

Benway is Lesley's third-ever athletics director, taking over for the departed Stanley Vieira, who accepted a similiar position at Chatham University after 12 years at Lesley.

In the 2010-11 academic year, four of Lesley's teams won New England Collegiate Conference Championships and competed in the NCAA Tournament. For the third time in the league's three-year history, the Lynx women's teams finished in first place in the NECC Champions Cup.

Founded in 1909, Lesley University is a private, co-educational institution in Cambridge and Boston, MA sponsoring undergraduate, post-graduate and doctoral degrees.
