BOSTON, Mass. – Trailing 1-0 with just 1:18 left on the clock, Lesley University sophomore Samantha Bessey (Algonquin, Ill.) lifted a shot from 20 yards out that curled just inside the top corner of the right post to even the match at 1-1 as the Lynx and Simmons College played to a 1-1 tie this afternoon at Daly Field.
The Lynx move to 1-0-1 on the season while the Sharks are now 0-1-1. The goal was Bessey's second marker in as many games in the young season.
Lesley owned a 25-15 total shot advantage, including 6-0 edge over the course of the two overtime periods, while also holding an 8-1 advantage on corner kicks.
Simmons senior Allison Bondi (Macomb, Mich.) put the Sharks on the board at the 35:53 mark of the opening half when she fired a shot from 20 yards away that sailed over the outstretched fingers of Lesley keeper Lilly Donovan (Newburyport, Mass.).
The teams were tied when the clock hit zero at the end of regulation. The Lynx were unable to score with six shots in the extra periods, including four tries that were turned back by Simmons junior keeper Casey Halle (Watertown, Mass.).
The Lynx were on the attack for the majority of the overtime periods and a corner kick by senior Julie Essick (Boerne, Texas) found the head of junior Samantha Turnbull (Holtsville, N.Y.) before sophomore Rachel Buckley (San Diego, Calif.) ripped a shot that was corralled by Halle.
Essick, sophomore McKenna Straube (Junction City, Ore.), and senior Lindsay Bos (Valencia, Calif.) all had shots turned away by Halle in the second overtime period.
Halle finished the afternoon with nine saves for the Sharks, while Donovan came up with seven stops for Lesley.
Simmons returns to action on Thursday, September 8 when it heads to South Hadley, Mass. to take on Smith College at 4:00 p.m., while the Lynx hosts Dean College in their home opener on September 7 at 8:00 p.m.
